Hong Kong Green Council to hold International Green Purchasing Congress 2006
The Hong Kong Green Council has made an official announcement to hold the International Green Purchasing Congress 2006 from 30th November to 1st December 2006 at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
The Congress will be held as a forum to promote the benefits of purchasing environmentally friendly products and is therefore expected to attract the interest of all consumers, including those in business, industry, government and the general public.
Hong Kong Green Council expect this unique event to stimulate interesting and valuable discussions and lead to positive initiatives, actions and results throughout Hong Kong and mainland China.
CEO of the Green Council, Ms Linda W. P. Ho, says:
Its staging fits in well with the Green Council objective of: rising knowledge and awareness of, promoting and stimulating "greener consumption" and "greener production" in Hong Kong as an effective and appropriate means to positively address certain current major environmental issues. When I use the term "greener" I am referring to alternative strategies, approaches, processes and initiatives that are "environmentally preferable" or "more environmentally responsible". On the consumption side, this involves the identification, selection, purchase/securing and use of better environmental choices. On the production side, this involves the design, development, production and/or provision of products and services with the following characteristics: (i) reduced mass intensity; (ii) reduced potential risk for human health and the environment; (iii) decreased energy intensity through the different phases of the product life cycle from development to disposal; (iv) increased reuse and recycle of wastes; (v) increased conservation of resources and/or use of renewable materials; and (vi) extended service and function.
The Congress has been planned and formulated to address the important "greener consumption and production equation" by offering a variety of informative presentations and workshop discussions focused primarily upon the planning, promotion and implementation of green purchasing systems, processes and activities in all sectors government, business, institutional, industry and the general public. Furthermore, other complementary presentations during the Congress will address: product eco-design and eco-production, product environmental performance certification and labeling, and various sustainable business models and approaches in the industrial and manufacturing sectors.
