UK Government Announces The National Action Plan: ‘Procuring The Future’
British Prime Minister Tony Blair announced a detailed plan to overhaul the way the UK government spends £150 million a year on goods and services to ensure it meets certain standards on environmental sustainability. The standards covers energy efficiency, green house gas emissions, the efficient use of natural resources and raw materials, transport, measures to avoid pollution and ways of ensuring environmentally sensitive goods such as timber.
The plan, complied by The Sustainable Procurement Task Force and titled ‘Procuring The Future’, includes a host of other environmental targets for official buildings, such as making all government offices carbon neutral in 6 years, and recycling 75% of waste, cutting overall waste generated by 25%, reducing water consumption by 25% and increasing energy efficiency per square meter by 30%, all by the end of the next decade.
